PRIME MINISTER BARROW CONCLUDES SUCCESFUL WORKING VISIT TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

During the visit, the Prime Minister met with United States President George W. Bush, with Mr. Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the Inter-American Development Bank, and with His Excellency Jose Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States. The visit to the White House was in response to an invitation extended by President George W Bush to Prime Minister Dean Barrow, the Honorable Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister of the Bahamas, and the Honorable David Thompson, Prime Minister of Barbados. The three Prime Ministers held frank and friendly discussions with President Bush on matters related to democracy, security, trade relations, and tourism. At the Inter-American Development Bank, Belize�s Prime Minister was able to advance discussions on the Belize portfolio at the IDB, including existing and pipeline projects. President Luis Alberto Moreno reiterated the IDB�s commitment as a full partner of Belize in its efforts related to development of key areas such as the energy sector, tourism and social sector projects. Prime Minister Barrow raised the possibility of IDB funding for the establishment of a new financial development institution in Belize to focus on education loans and small and micro enterprise development. The Bank�s reaction was positive. In the meeting with OAS Secretary General Insulza, the Prime Minister thanked the OAS for its invaluable role in the Belize / Guatemala process. The Secretary General expressed the continued full support of the OAS to governance, democracy and security initiatives in Belize. The Secretary General also made a commitment to visit Belize later in the year. The Prime Minister was accompanied to all meetings by Ambassador Nestor Mendez. |
