Treaties
overview
A great portion of the work done in any foreign ministry
is directed by the legal framework of treaties. A treaty
may be defined as a formal agreement between two or more
states, between states and international organizations or
between international organizations. It is internationally
legally binding.
Most treaties and international agreements go through a
similar sequence of events from origin to completion. See
our Treaty Making Process for further details. The
text of a treaty must first be negotiated and agreed upon
by the relevant parties; it is then opened for a period
of time for signature; then it becomes legally binding
and
enters into force through a process of ratification or
accession;
it may also be amended and it may be terminated by the
withdrawal
or denunciation a Party.
The Head of State, Head of Government or Minister for Foreign
Affairs are the designated authorities responsible for executing
actions relating to a State’s demonstrating its willingness
to undertake the legal rights and obligations contained
in a treaty.
The following indexes indicate bilateral and multilateral
treaties in which Belize participates. The index provides
the name of the Treaty, the date on which Belize became
a participant to the Treaty, the parties involved, and the
status. As you can see, the section is divided into bilateral
and multilateral treaties. Our bilateral treaty segment
is further subdivided into post and pre independence treaties.
Our multilateral treaty segment is subdivided by relevant
subject headings.
